Hobby Projects
A personal passion project showcasing creative development and my love for gaming communities
ERGamesPRO – Cloud-Native Game Infrastructure
A fully automated, scalable hosting platform
architected entirely on AWS. This project
leverages Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using
AWS CDK (Python) to provision and manage
resources dynamically. The platform features
a reactive, user-friendly dashboard built
with Vue 3.5, offering seamless server
management.
Current Status: Closed Beta
(Invite Only)
Key Achievement: Transiting
from manual hardware to 100% code-defined
infrastructure.
Technical Challenges & Solutions
1. Reconciling Stateful Gaming with Stateless Cloud
The Problem: Minecraft servers are inherently stateful—they rely on continuous read/write operations for world data and player inventories. Traditional cloud containerization (like standard Docker deployments) treats instances as ephemeral (temporary), meaning if a container crashes or updates, all progress is lost.
The Solution: I engineered a decoupled storage architecture by separating the Compute layer (the game server container) from the Storage layer. I utilized persistent storage volumes (EFS/EBS) mounted dynamically to the containers at runtime via AWS CDK.
Outcome: This ensures that even if the game server is destroyed or redeployed for updates, the world data persists independently, achieving Zero Data Loss reliability.
2. Preventing "Cloud Bill Shock" via Automation
The Problem: Running high-performance game servers 24/7 on AWS is cost-prohibitive for a private community. However, users expect servers to be available whenever they want to play, without waiting for manual admin intervention.
The Solution: I built an Event-Driven Provisioning System using Python and AWS Lambda. The frontend triggers an API call that launches the infrastructure only when a session is requested. I implemented strict inactivity protocols (using RCON/Log monitoring) to automatically snapshot data and terminate expensive compute resources when no players are detected for 15 minutes.
Outcome: A ~70% reduction in infrastructure costs compared to always-on instances, without sacrificing user experience.
3. Eliminating Configuration Drift
The Problem: In the early "hobby" days, manual tweaks to server settings on the live machine led to "configuration drift"—where the live environment no longer matched the documentation or local tests, causing update failures.
The Solution: I transitioned to Immutable Infrastructure using AWS CDK. Every networking rule, IAM policy, and server configuration is defined in Python code. Infrastructure changes are committed to Git, reviewed, and deployed via a CI/CD pipeline.
Outcome: This guarantees that the production environment is deterministic and reproducible. If a server behaves strangely, I can tear it down and rebuild an exact clone in minutes.
